We have now completed a five-week challenge to crown our “winter champion.” This competition ran in both the student and non-student categories (but not the school class category, since there are not many schools taking part and different schools have different schedules). As part of this challenge, we posted maps of five different types and increasing difficulty levels:
December 5: Dot map (difficulty level: 5)
December 12: Cartogram (difficulty level: 6)
December 19: Proportional symbol map (difficulty level: 7)
December 26: Choropleth (difficulty level: 8)
January 9: Isoline map (difficulty level: 9)
During the challenge, we posted our weekly-top ten as usual on the “Game” page, but we also added up your scores from each week. Over the course of five weeks, the highest possible score was 25.
Congratulations to Sam, who won the student category with 9 total points, and to Kris, who won the non-student category with 22.5 points. We also wish congratulations to Eva (2nd place) and Aaron (7th place); along with Sam and Kris, they were the only people to submit a correct answer in all five weeks of the competition.
Finally, we would like to give a special word of praise to Sam for submitting five correct answers. These maps got hard by the end, and, as your incorrect guesses were rolling in, especially in Week 5, we greatly enjoyed watching a high school junior succeed where so many very adults were failing.
