This map is a dot map of the world. (Do you need a refresher on what a dot map is? Visit our “Basics” page for a quick primer.) This is a really fun map that was made for us by David P., who specializes in maps with dots in unusual places. And, yes, there are dots on this map in the middle of the ocean. As always, your job is to figure out what this dot map represents.

Stumped? Check back Wednesday, Friday, next Wednesday, and next Friday for hints about where to focus your investigation. The answer will be posted on Monday, July 9, 2018. Good luck!

Wednesday’s hint: The first thing to notice about this map is that pretty much all of the dots are in extremely sparsely populated places.

Friday’s hint: Most of the dots on this map appear scattered all over, which obscures the fact that some dots are more important than others. The dot in California, for example, is actually upwards of fifty dots in such close proximity that it looks like just one.

Wednesday’s hint: One of the dots just northeast of the Dominican Republic was discussed at great length in a 2016 film that was nominated for Best Picture.

Friday’s hint: The dot mentioned in the previous hint was where a certain future U.S. senator said, “It was hot in there” aboard the deck of the U.S.S. Noa.
